The detection event of single photons by SSPDs can be split into four phases, of which the first and the last are very well understood.

Photon − electron interaction

As a first step, the photon is absorbed inside the superconducting film. This process can be described by classical electromagnetics. This allows the simulation using common simulation techniques like FDTD or FEM.
